Is now the right time to book your ski break?

Although it feels like the heat of this summer has only just left us, for many keen skiers now is the time to start looking in earnest for their winter break, either later this year or early into 2014. If the market this year is anything like last year then the Daily Telegraph’s advice would still stand, book now to take advantage of early booking discounts and to ensure you get the winter ski break you want.

So where’s good to go in Europe in 2014? Don’t fancy the drive down to the French Alps? Well you could do a whole lot worse than look to the stalwarts of St Anton and Klosters. Find out why these enduring ski destinations still offer all that’s best about a winter ski holiday.

St Anton – Austria

Right in the West of the Tirol, St Anton is at one end of a lift network that goes from St Christoph to Stuben. Larger than a village but still smaller than a town its roads meander down a long narrow valley – however the centre is blissfully car free and retains a charming traditional air. During the day it is bustling but by night it really comes to life – the après ski is brilliantly lively atmosphere with a great choice of restaurants and bars to choose from. Your ski pass will cover Zurs and Lech that you can reach using the regular free ski buses, or if you fancy a little less people-packed journey the taxis offer an economical alternative. The ski terrain is varied and offers plenty for those who consider themselves experts or advanced intermediates. Snow cover is generally good with plenty of snow guns if they are needed. As the weather often comes in from the North or North West St Anton and its neighbours usually benefit from heavy falls of snow – much more so than other resorts of a comparable height.

Klosters – Switzerland

Although this resort is often associated with the ski trips of our Royal family it is actually a very accessible resort with something for most skiers. The main village has a lovely traditional charm to it still and there are a number of cute mountain restaurants for lunch or coffee stop offs. The centre, Klosters Platz, has a good choice of upmarket, traditional hotels and now benefits from the bypass taking all the traffic around the centre. It also has the cable car to transport you up to Gotschna. Snow reliability is reasonable even at Klosters’ relatively low altitude. It shares its extensive slopes with its neighbour Davos and has a particularly good set of intermediate runs; whilst for those that are slightly more advanced there are plenty of off-piste slopes to take advantage of.

Getting there

Most airports now offer valet parking for little more than the traditional car parks; the ultimate convenience for dropping off your company car at the terminal door. Be sure to take advantage of the lower air fares by booking soon. Just watch out for additional ski baggage costs – Swiss Air has recently announced that it will no longer offer free ski equipment carriage as standard.
